Ok, first, the weather – it has been 49 F at dawn for the last two nights. I know that doesn’t seem all that cold to you who are stuck way up north, but most homes here have no heat and after a summer of nighttime lows in the 80′s F, 49F is very cold. And did I mention the wind that blows from the northwest when the sun rises. Makes one chilly morning beach walk. Brrrrr!
Sad restaurant news – the Gemini Deli, brain child of Michael Morel and his mother Vicki, has closed. It lasted a bit more than 1 year I think. The food was great and the prices very fair but Vicki became ill and had to return to Canada for medical treatment and Michael tells me he just hasn’t had customers, unlike last year this time. Why? Hard to know. Calle Hidalgo is a difficult location, this I know from 2+ years of having a photo gallery on that street. Tourists just seem to avoid it. It didn’t help at all that Buena Vida closed (right down the road) and Alas y Olas Gallery moved several blocks, close to Jill Logan’s gallery. Once again, there are a lot of empty store fronts on Calle Hidalgo. In fact, the only interesting functioning retail space left is La Bodega, Mac’s wine store.
