Even More Info On Bismarkcito Shooting, May 10, La Paz, Baja Sur

The following is directly from the La Paz Gringos group (member StefenMWest):

The Beltran Leyva Cartel was created by 4 brothers, Carlos (in prison since 2009), Hector (at large with $5 million dollar bounty), Alfredo (in prison since 2008) and Arturo (killed by police in 2009). They were once one of Mexico’s most powerful cartels and are now considered disbanded by some authorities since the arrest af a top lieutenant in 2011.

The shooting victim at the Bismark(cito) the other day (May 10, 2012), Zeferino Félix Beltrán, was a nephew of Hector, the Beltran brother still at large.

In the last 6 months, the police have intercepted 2 large shipments of drugs, one of 10Kg of cocaine and another 13Kg of heroin at Pichilingue (La Paz) on the Baja Ferry.

It was just over two years ago, in Jan of 2010 that “el Teo”, leader of the Culiacan Cartel was arrested in the Fidepaz area (La Paz) where he had been living for more than a year.

More Info (In Spanish) On May 10 Bismarkcito Shooting

The May 11, 2012 edition of Sudcaliforniano (La Paz newspaper) had a story on the shooting. It’s in Spanish of course, but you can run it through Google translate to get some idea of the content – granted this will leave a lot to be desired but it’s better than nothing. They are calling it a classic “narco” professional execution. It is fairly well known that narcos vacation in La Paz and many maintain “safe” residences there. Apparently La Paz is no longer quite as safe as it was just a few days ago.

Shooting At Bismarkcito Restaurant In La Paz, Baja

I don’t know any more than this, but this is not good for the “city of peace”. Bismarkcito is very popular and has great seafood and taco dishes. Sad, so sad.

La Paz, BCS-The Attorney General of the State reports that at 16: 15 hours he
was advised by telephone that at the Bismarkcito restaurant, located on Avenida Alvaro Obregon (malecon) of this city was a person who had been shot and so immediately moved to the scene the Public Prosecutor agents specializing in manslaughter and Research Experts and others who initiated the investigations and had the crime scene secured.

The lawyer Gamill Arreola Leal, Attorney General in the state, announced this
and said the person was identified as Jose Machado Quinonez, 53-year-old
native of Los Mochis, occupation farmer on the farm of the delegation’s
Pimientilla of Plans, in the municipality of La Paz.

La Paz, B.C.S.- La Procuraduría General de Justicia del Estado a informa

No Baja Brewing Company In Todos Santos, Baja?

It certainly appears that way.  A few weeks ago, Mac at La Bodega wine store told me the old Gemini Deli location was being rented by Baja Brewing Co. Today I drove by and there was a for rent sign on the location so I guess Baja Brewing isn’t in the picture any longer. Sad, they make great beer.

Speaking of great beer, I chanced across Bohemia Chocolate Stout last week. Costs about $6 US per 6 pack and it is delicious. It’s a limited production product whose season may already be over as I could only find 4 six-packs in La Paz last week and none in Todos Santos this week. It’s an amazing beer, especially coming from a huge commercial brewery, the brewers of Tecate.
