Las Playitas Road Paving Update – Todos Santos, Baja Sur

This just arrived in today’s email:

Dear Property Owners:

It gives me great pleasure to announce the following:

*  Ing. Salvador Adrian Perez Ramirez, the engineer in charge of the Playitas Road paving, has held meetings with the foreign (March 30) and Mexican (April 17) communities.  The purpose of these meetings was to gain input and to disseminate information so that Ing. Perez could make decisions that are reflective of the funds available as well as the needs of the communities.

* The paving of the first 3 kilometers is now finalized, will start in approximately two months and will take about three months to complete.  The road will be paved from the elementary school to approximately Canon del Gato.

* The Delegado of Todos Santos is requesting that an additional 2.8 kilometers of paving be funded by the BCS government in order to complete the project as far as  Batequitos.  Although we do not know if and when those additional kilometers of paving will be allocated, the first three kilometers are finalized, money is allocated and paving will start in approximately two months.

Thank you for all of your efforts on behalf of this project.  Signing the February petition—which accumulated 680 signatures—as well as attending meetings, definitely has shown broad community support.  We all have reason to celebrate!

Sincerely,

Vickie M. Butler

Whale Watching In Baja Sur, Mèxico

It’s nearly the end (or maybe already is the end) of our whale watching season. I haven’t seen a whale on the Las Tunas beach for several weeks now but they may still be hanging in the lagoon areas up north where they breed. As a reminder of what you might see, here’s a video from Lopez Mateos. Enjoy!

The Ever Changing US Consul In Los Cabos Affair

It seems to me, judging from the public notices and my private emails with the consul office, that the US Consul in Los Cabos, Baja Sur is having personnel problems and cannot offer the normal services consistently. I hope to call them next week and find out the full story and to discover how we are supposed to renew passports if they cannot accept the forms. Until then, here is yet another public notice courtesy of BPE:

The U.S. Consular Agency in Los Cabos is pleased to announce that we will be open to the public by appointment on April 10, 11, and 12 to process applications for U.S. passports and consular reports of birth abroad, and to provide notarial services. A consular officer from the U.S. Consulate General in Tijuana will be present to provide these services. If you would like to make an appointment, please call 624-143-3566. The U.S. Consular Agency continues to provide daily assistance to U.S. citizens who require emergency services.
In addition, a town hall meeting for U.S. citizens will be held on April 10, at 6:00 p.m. at the Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort on Carretera Transpeninsular. Mr. Bill Whitaker, Chief of American Citizens Services at the U.S. Consulate General in Tijuana will address issues of interest to the American community. He will also discuss the roles of both the Consular Agency and the Consulate.

The Consular Agency is currently unable to provide routine passport and notarial services outside of these dates, but will announce future opportunities as they arise. In the interim, please call 624-143-3566 with questions or to add your name to the waiting list.  The Consular Agency is located at:

Todos Santos Baja Tidbits – Road Pavings / Construction

Ok, here’s what I heard today:

1) The Las Playitas road will indeed be paved. It’s been said before but this time I have inside info from a very reliable source. Will it be finished by October 2012? Not likely, more likely to start around that time but we will see. Be nice to have it finished by then. Also, in total, 3 km will be paved reaching to Calle Internacional.

2) The road to Punta Lobos will also be paved and the government will be paying for it, not the new investment group that has purchased a very large swath of land from the military checkpoint north of town to Punta Lobos. I was not told the timing on this but supposedly in the same time frame as #1 above.

3) The four lane bypass around Todos Santos has begun construction. You can see heavy machinery clearing a path through the hills just north of the military checkpoint north of town. This bypass is supposed to reconnect with Highway 19 just south of the new bridge that is being worked on currently (about 2 miles south of town where the 4 lane begins now.)
