Todos Santos, Baja – May 12, 2012 Morning Fog

It’s June gloom in May. Need I mention how whacko the weather has been. Hot – cold – rain drops in May – sunny – cloudy. I have never seen anything like this in my years here and neither have my Mexican friends. Friday a week ago, the wind kept changing – when it blew from the south, the temps rose 20+ F degrees. When it blew from the north, the temps dropped an equal amount. There were dust devil like swirling winds and then dark ominous clouds that actually dropped a bit of rain in the Las Tunas area during Kramer’s pizza night. Unheard of!

So this morning it’s been foggy since dawn, over 3.5 hours now. Water dripping off of everything.

Huffington Post Recommended Tequilas

Tony Sachs over at Huffington Post has given his best shot recommending tequilas to be sipped, not slammed.

Tequila didn’t really gain any respect, at least in the States, until the 1990s, when the emergence of pricey “premium” tequilas like Patron gained a foothold among serious drinkers as well as barstool spendthrifts. In the last decade, the market for premium tequilas has exploded, and along with the growing market, new brands seem to be emerging on a weekly basis. It must be getting awfully crowded in the highlands of Jalisco, the Mexican state where the blue agave from which tequila comes must, by law, be grown.

Don Julio 1942 has been one of my favorite tequilas for a while now. Still waiting to find a Jose Cuervo tequila that I like. So many of the brands he mentions are completely new to me and I have never seen them here in Baja Sur – I will be looking for them. But then right now tequila has an enormous export market to the US.

No Baja Brewing Company In Todos Santos, Baja?

It certainly appears that way.  A few weeks ago, Mac at La Bodega wine store told me the old Gemini Deli location was being rented by Baja Brewing Co. Today I drove by and there was a for rent sign on the location so I guess Baja Brewing isn’t in the picture any longer. Sad, they make great beer.

Speaking of great beer, I chanced across Bohemia Chocolate Stout last week. Costs about $6 US per 6 pack and it is delicious. It’s a limited production product whose season may already be over as I could only find 4 six-packs in La Paz last week and none in Todos Santos this week. It’s an amazing beer, especially coming from a huge commercial brewery, the brewers of Tecate.

How About A Little Solo Swim Across The Sea Of Cortés

On June 11th, 48-year-old Californian Paul Lundgren will attempt to complete the longest unassisted solo nonstop open water swim in history.

Oh boy, that swim is from Loreto, Baja Sur to Guaymus, Sinaloa, México. About 76 miles, all alone in the water. And if the winds are blowing, the water will be rough. Not to mention all the natural inhabitants of the sea, some of whom may not appreciate Paul’s presence.
